Ric Edelman, head of the Digital Assets Council of Financial Advisors, is advocating for a substantial shift in investment strategies. He’s continuously advocating for financial advisors to start allocating their clients' portfolios in 10-40% of client portfolios to cryptos. This recommendation is a big step forward as an evolution in Edelman’s framing of federal action on digital assets.
Four years ago, Edelman made waves by proposing that everyone should own at least some cryptocurrencies. In his 2021 book, “The Truth about Crypto,” he called for a much more modest allocation of only 1%. Today, Edelman doge 40% allocation diamonds hands crypto a conservative estimate based on what everyone else is touting.
Edelman credits this shift, at least in part, to how the crypto environment has changed in the last four years.
"Today I am saying 40%, that's astonishing," - Ric Edelman
Edelman thinks the classic 60/40 investment model isn’t cutting it when it comes to long-term investing anymore. He cites increased longevity as a key factor, with life expectancy in the U.S. rising from 47 in the 1900s to a projected 85 today. With rapid medical technology, he believes we can get average life expectancy up to 100 in the next three decades. He pointed out that today’s 60-year-old is the equivalent of yesterday’s 30-year-old.
"You need to get better returns than you can get from bonds and you need to hold equities longer than ever before," - Ric Edelman
Edelman admits that his latest recommendation is a big departure even in his own thinking. Four years ago, Bitcoin’s future was quite uncertain. He was unsure if governments would ban it, if the underlying technology would become obsolete, or if consumers and institutions would embrace it.
"Bitcoin prices don't move in sync with stocks or bonds or gold or oil or commodities," - Ric Edelman
Edelman contends that cryptocurrencies—especially in the long term—hold the promise of greater returns than other asset classes.
"Today, all those questions have been resolved," - Ric Edelman
Edelman believes that cryptocurrencies offer the potential for higher returns compared to other asset classes.
"The crypto asset class offers the opportunity for higher returns than you're likely to get in virtually any other asset class," - Ric Edelman
