All too often, we’ve watched the promises of blockchain completely transform everything, including finance, supply chains. Now, science? We know it all sounds audacious, perhaps even a little too good to be true.

Traditional science is slow. Bureaucratic. Mired in funding battles and publication biases. We know that peer review can often be a gatekeeping exercise. Young researchers have a hard time breaking through with their ideas, and the very best disruptive innovation is often crushed. We all know it. DeSci proposes a radical alternative: a more open, transparent, and collaborative system powered by blockchain.

Think about it. Blockchain, fundamentally, is a technology of trust and verification. In a world that’s overflowing with technical research data, mistakes and shady intentional alternations warp the information. A verifiable, reproducible ledger can change the game on how we manage this data. Smart contracts could automatically distribute funding, meaning researchers can receive payment in a more timely and equitable manner. NFTs may safeguard intellectual property rights, fostering competition and preventing the appropriation of sensitive data.

Platforms such as Bio Protocol, ResearchHub, and vitaDAO are already testing the waters on these ideas. They’re creating networks of researchers in which researchers can easily connect with funders, freely share their data and products, and be compensated for their work. It’s a great vision, a powerful idea, a much-needed breath of creative air.

Remember when DeFi exploded? It was the same story: promises of democratizing finance, cutting out the middlemen, and empowering individuals. DeFi has had its successes and failures, as well as many scams. It has, in many ways, fundamentally transformed the financial landscape. It forced traditional institutions to innovate. It opened avenues for new patterns of investment and wealth creation.

DeSci has the potential to disrupt science in the same way. Now, picture a world where it is the community that decides how funding should be allocated, rather than a small group of esoteric institutions. Wherever data is publicly available and free to access for those who would like to use it. Where laws enable researchers to share their knowledge with the public, instead of hoarding it. This is an environment in which technology advances at an ever–increasing, exponential pace.

Here's where the skepticism comes in. And while the open nature of DeSci funding could promote innovation, it is a double-edged sword. As well as bringing innovation and excitement, DeFi was inundated with scammers and rug pulls. Just as likely, DeSci could end up being a magnet for bad ideas or complete scams.

These are real concerns. We have to be honest about the obstacles that DeSci will need to overcome. It is not a magic bullet, and it’s not going to solve all of science’s problems immediately.

Here's why I'm still optimistic. DeSci taps into something fundamental: the human desire to understand the world around us and to make it a better place. It’s about giving scientists a greater sense of independence, encouraging interaction and collaboration among each other, and increasing the pace of discovery.

Think about the big problems we face today: climate change, pandemics, aging populations. These are huge, complicated challenges that we will need to solve urgently. The traditional model of scientific research is just too damn slow to have realistic hopes of keeping up.

  • Lack of regulation: Makes it difficult to hold bad actors accountable.
  • Scalability issues: Blockchain networks can get congested and expensive to use.

DeSci offers a glimmer of hope. It’s an opportunity to create a better, more equitable, efficient, transparent and collaborative scientific ecosystem. It’s a moonshot, to be sure, but one worth taking.

We should be seeding DeSci projects, finding what works through novel funding models, and promoting open data sharing. Yes, we need to work through important security and regulatory challenges, but we cannot allow those challenges to frighten us into stagnation.

The future of science is at stake. Will we lean in to the blockchain’s transformative potential, or settle for the default? The choice is ours. The anxiety, urgency, and impatience of our many global challenges should spur us forward into productive action. We need to pursue this idea meaningfully with clear heads and eager pocketbooks.
